Best Restaurants Inner West | By Those Who Eat Here
Sydney has a plethora of Inner West restaurants. So, if you’re faced with the task of picking where to eat out, it can get overwhelming. What restaurants have good food? What’s great value? Where do I find the best Italian, Indian or Vietnamese?
The answers are never easy to find – unless you know a local who’s willing to offer the inside scoop on the best restaurants Inner West Sydney has to offer.
To make life – and dining – easy, here are five restaurants that locals try to keep quiet about, but come back time and again to for fantastic taste, value, service and atmosphere.
The Indian | Ginger
We couldn’t leave Ginger out of our Best Restaurant Inner West Sydney guide. They may just serve up the best Indian food Sydney has to offer. Featuring an authentic, yet distinctive menu, Ginger delivers with lip smacking, spicy dishes bursting with flavour.
Our fave dishes at this unassuming Harris Park gem are the Darbari Curry and the Tandoori Prawns. Golly gosh yes!
The Vietnamese | Bau Truong
Bau Truong is one of the latest upmarket Vietnamese restaurants. Expect to pay a little more at this Inner West hotspot, but the treat is worth it!
Seafood at Bau Truong is the standout on the menu, with fresh pangs of sweet, salty and sour coming at you from all angles. If you order the Crispy Pastry Prawns in an Orange Glaze, the Whole Snapper and the fresh Rice Paper Rolls – you’ll go home happy.
The Tapas | Forage – Marrickville
Tapas are the perfect share food, which means you get to try a little of everything! Forage, found in Marrickville, has an outstanding food and wine menu, featuring fresh, locally sourced produce and an utterly romantic atmosphere to boot.
Head to this Inner West tapas restaurant for your next date night, and be sure to order the Zingy Tuna Carpaccio and the melt in your mouth, braised Grass-Fed Beef Cheeks.

So, these are five of the best restaurants Inner West locals love to call their own. And now you can join them, but “Shhh” don’t let everyone in on the secret.
The Pub | The Henson
The Inner West certainly isn’t short of pubs, but if you’re wanting a pub-like atmosphere – minus the stench of beer-sodden carpets, and a menu which offers more than steak and chips or a parmie (although we love them so), check out The Henson.
Located on Illawarra Road in Marickville, The Henson is what you’d call the cross between a pub and a restaurant. Visit these guys for their scrumptious Sweet Potato Fries, teamed with one of their sensational Burgers. You’ll also love the soft Shell Crab Burger, Karaage Chicken and Pork Belly Varieties.
The Italian | Fernandos Italian’s
And finally, us! Leichhardt local’s Italian favourite, At Fernando’s.
We’re the original and best Inner West Italian restaurant, serving up mouthwatering home-style cooking to delighted families, friends, lovers and function guests since 2003.
People come from far and wide across the Inner West for a taste of our crispy pizzas and piping hot homemade pastas – an offer no Italian food fanatic can refuse!
At our Tuscan-themed restaurant on Norton Street, we invite you to embrace good old fashioned food as it was always intended in an atmosphere of genuine warmth and friendliness.
Ours is a family run eatery that feels like home. The entire menu is based on Momma’s home-style recipes, so you know you’re in for a lovingly prepared meal whenever you visit.
Hot Tip: Start with some homemade Cannelloni filled with seasoned Ricotta and Spinach.
Whether it’s date night, a group affair or a bite to eat before heading to the Palace Norton Street, we look forward to welcoming you with amazing good, warm service and big smiling, “Ciaos!”
We’re open Tuesday – Sunday 5.30pm until late, as well as brunch and lunch on Saturday and Sundays 11.30am – 3pm.
